A monarch who has devoted much of his life to environmental causes will announce measures designed to boost motorists and encourage the extraction of fossil fuels

Today is the first King’s Speech since 1951. Few now alive will remember the last one, delivered by George VI; his grandson, Charles III, was only two years old at the time of that event.

It was in fact Charles who gave the last so-called Queen’s Speech, in May last year when his mother was too But this time will be different, his first chance to address Parliament using the words “my Government”, as he lays out the legislative agenda under his own name. Of course, it is not really his speech. Though he has been given advance sight of the contents, he was not given any say on them. If he had, you can assume they would be rather different: a monarch who has devoted much of his life to environmental causes will announce a number of measures designed to boost motorists and encourage the extraction of fossil fuels in the North Sea.If His Majesty is unhappy about this, he will be careful not to let it show.

And then one day, when he follows his father to the throne and makes his own King’s Speech packed with policies he may privately oppose, he too will have to grin and bear it.The School of Life
