This article provides a comprehensive analysis of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2's performance, examining the impact of different graphics settings and system configurations. It explores the game's reliance on CryEngine, its scalability options, and the effects of various quality presets on frame rates. The analysis also highlights the CPU-intensive nature of the game and the relative performance differences observed across various hardware combinations.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 , the open-world 'realistic' RPG, distinguishes itself from the crowd due to its utilization of Crytek's CryEngine. Developer Warhorse Studios opted for CryEngine over popular choices like Unreal Engine for its original game and has retained it for the sequel. This decision is reportedly rooted in the team's extensive familiarity with the engine, allowing for precise fine-tuning in the sequel. CryEngine stands in contrast to Unreal Engine's embrace of ray tracing.
While Unreal Engine prioritizes ray-traced reflections and global illumination, Crytek's software relies on more traditional rendering techniques. Although this doesn't preclude CryEngine from producing stunning visuals, screen-space reflections and screen-space direct occlusion cannot match the accuracy of ray-traced counterparts. However, don't be misled into thinking that CryEngine is less demanding on your GPU. Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 will push even high-end gaming PCs to their limits when running at 4K with maximum quality settings. Fortunately, the game offers excellent graphics scalability with five distinct quality presets, allowing players to tailor the visual experience to their hardware capabilities. To assess Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2's performance, I conducted tests across seven different gaming platforms, encompassing a range of CPUs, GPUs, and RAM configurations. The benchmark runs utilized an early game location around the village of Troskowitz. This area provides a balanced mix of open vistas and dense vegetation, while avoiding the heavy NPC density found in other regions. It's crucial to note that these test results reflect the performance of a relatively early review code. Since then, the game has received patches, primarily addressing bugs, but I suspect some performance optimizations were also included. Beginning with the Low preset, which sets all quality settings to their minimum values, we observe Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 at its most basic visual presentation. This doesn't imply a geographical deficiency; rather, it signifies the game's lowest visual fidelity. As suggested by the accompanying screenshots, these static images might lead some to believe that there's minimal benefit to using higher settings. However, at the Low preset, the rendering engine employs a very aggressive Level of Detail (LOD) system. Objects, NPCs, environmental details, and shadows abruptly pop into view at a clearly defined distance from the player. Conversely, the Medium preset delivers a significant visual upgrade. The LOD system becomes less aggressive (although some pop-in remains noticeable), and shadows, along with the environment, exhibit noticeable improvements. While using a higher quality preset inevitably leads to a performance hit, the impact is manageable, excluding 4K resolution. Across all resolutions and test systems, there's roughly a 25% decrease in average frame rate, a substantial drop but one that's acceptable considering the already high baseline performance. Another noteworthy observation when comparing the Low and Medium presets is that Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is quite CPU-intensive. Comparing the RTX 4070 and RX 7800 XT figures highlights this dependency. While the difference in performance between the Core i5 13600K and Ryzen 9 9900X systems isn't significant, the latter exhibits slightly better frame rates at 1080p and 1440p.

Kingdom Come Deliverance 2: No Multiplayer, Just Medieval MayhemKingdom Come Deliverance 2 is a single-player RPG experience, as confirmed by the developers. The game will not feature any multiplayer or co-op modes, a decision that aligns with the original game and its lack of multiplayer functionality.
