The presenter encouraged her 15-year-old son to go interrailing for three weeks around Europe
Good on her, I thought when I read that TV presenter Kirstie Allsopp had encouraged her 15-year-old son, Oscar Hercules, to go
While not everyone has been as positive – Allsopp has been called irresponsible on social media – I find it quite refreshing that, in the age, there is a parent in the public eye advocating for more flexibility for their children rather than micromanaging every aspect of their lives.
It has made me think about how much freedom I give my children and how giving them more could do wonders.I have seen first-hand, through WhatsApp groups and gossip at the school gates, how every aspect of children’s lives is now overseen by their parents, from the contents of their lunch box to the after-school activities. And though I don’t personally agree with this, I do sometimes feel I have to be more hands on with my own children as a result.
But is it really necessary for me to drive them into town and drop them off? Maybe I should be encouraging them to take the bus instead. Or rather than going out to buy multi-coloured post-it notes to encourage my son to make a revision plan, maybe I should try leaving him to it.
Perhaps we should all take a leaf out of Kirstie Allsopp’s book and let our kids off the leash every now and then.
