Two police officers are in a serious condition in hospital after they were threatened and then stabbed by a man in Newcastle early on Good Friday morning.
Police were called to a home in the Newcastle suburb of Wickham, about 2.5 hours from Sydney, after reports of stealing about 8am on Friday.

Picture: NCA Newswire/ Gaye Gerard It's alleged the man lunged at the police, stabbing one in the chest and injuring the second constable's hands.Both officers were rushed to John Hunter Hospital where they remain in a serious but stable condition.Officers from the State Crime Command's Homicide Squad will investigate the circumstances leading up to the stabbing, including the use of a police firearm.
