A team of over ten vets at Knowsley Safari Park successfully performed a groundbreaking surgery on Amara, a southern white rhinoceros, to repair her fractured ulna. This unprecedented procedure, drawing expertise from equine surgeons at the University of Liverpool, involved key-hole surgery and a five-hour operation.
Knowsley Safari 's expert medical team have carried out a 'world first' operation on one of its residents. More than ten vets, including specialist surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses and animal keepers, plus support staff, have carried out specialised veterinary treatment to help heal a southern white rhinoceros’ broken leg . Amara, who featured on Channel 4’s Secret Life of the Safari Park , began limping on her front right leg.
Amara was placed in a full limb cast to support her leg and stayed in her enclosure to minimise movement, but there was uncertainty about her recovery. Amara eventually found her feet and is able to enjoy life outdoors again. Dr David Stack, senior lecturer in Equine Surgery at the University of Liverpool, said: “Amara’s operation is unlike anything we’ve experienced previously.
