The brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor has sparked outrage in India.
India's top court has said the recent rape and murder of a trainee doctor in West Bengal state has "shocked the conscience of the nation" and criticised authorities for their handling of the investigation.
He listed out a range of problems plaguing medical institutions, including a lack of resting rooms and toilets, functional CCTV cameras, security personnel and adequate screening for arms at entrances. He added that he was "deeply concerned" that the name of the victim and her photographs were shared on social media. Indian laws prohibit naming of a rape victim and those guilty can be fined or sentenced to up to two years in prison.
At the weekend, doctors across hospitals in India observed a nation-wide strike called by the Indian Medical Association . Elective surgeries and outpatient treatments were suspended with only emergency services available at major hospitals. Last week, the Kolkata High Court criticised the local police for lapses and transferred the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation .
