Award-winning British rap duo Krept and Konan are opening a supermarket in their hometown of Croydon , aiming to better serve the area's diverse population. Saveways , touted as Britain's first large-scale supermarket catering to Black, Asian, and ethnic communities, will occupy a 15,000 sq ft venue. The duo, known for their breakthrough 2013 album 'Young Kingz,' emphasized their commitment to starting business ventures in Croydon , the community that raised them.
Krept, whose real name is Casyo Johnson, explained that the need for such a supermarket became immediately apparent when their business partner and co-founder, Kaysor Ali, presented the idea. He highlighted the common experience of having to visit multiple stores to find all the necessary items, noting the lack of comprehensive options for specific cultural ingredients in mainstream supermarkets.Konan, whose real name is Karl Wilson, added that returning to his hometown of Thornton Heath to build something meaningful was deeply satisfying. This venture marks their latest foray into the business world, following the success of their dessert restaurant and Krept's skincare brand. The duo's commitment to their community extends beyond business ventures, as both received British Empire Medals (BEM) in 2020 for their contributions to music and the local community in Croydon. Krept, reflecting on his upbringing, offered advice to young people facing similar challenges, urging them to persevere and believe in a brighter future.
