Around a dozen Kurdish activists launched a protest on Wednesday in the European Parliament on the 24th anniversary of Turkey’s arrest of their leader Abdullah Ocalan.

STRASBOURG, France –

“They are pro-PKK activists,” MEP Bernard Guetta told AFP, referring to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party , banned in Turkey and blacklisted as a terror organisation in the EU. Another MEP, German social democrat Bernd Lange, said the way the protesters were clinging precariously to the balustrade appeared as if they were threatening to jump.

“This parliament stands proudly for freedom of expression, and the right to protest, but any demonstration must always respect our rules, public safety and not disrupt our democratic debates,” she said.
