Higashioka's arm and bat are big; Suarez gets final five outs to rescue bullpen after Musgrove's quality start
Kyle Higashioka helped out Joe Musgrove from behind the plate and then at the plate in the middle of Wednesday’s game. Robert Suarez saved the day at the end. Higashioka, the Padres’ backup catcher, threw out two would-be base stealers in the top of the fourth inning and hit his first home run with his new team in the bottom of the fourth, denying the Cardinals what would have been a game-tying run and then padding the Padres’ lead with what ended up being the deciding run.
There probably would have been more damage if not for Higashioka throwing out runners for the second and third outs of the inning. In between a lead-off single by Brendan Donovan and double by Willson Contreras, Musgrove struck out Paul Goldschmidt and Higashioka threw out Donovan trying to steal second. And after Nolan Arenado flared an RBI single to right-center to bring in Contreras, he was thrown out by Higashioka as well.
