The controversial Australian star took to Twitter on Tuesday afternoon to sarcastically gloat about the huge sales.
“Wow Nick Kyrgios is bad for the sport! Wow what a disgrace, a national embarrassment! How dare he sell out another stadium, the arrogance,” he wrote. A commenter quickly cut down Kyrgios, writing: “Alright chill Kygs. We get it. We know you get fans into stadiums. So does Novak. Just be humble and let your play do the talking. Get this slam. Rod Laver Arena has a 14,820-seat capacity and tickets were priced at just $20, with proceeds going to the Australian Tennis Foundation. Thousands flooded Ticketmaster within minutes of the seats going on sale at midday on Tuesday, with fans only allowed to buy one ticket as a result.The other event, Tennis Plays for Peace, will direct all proceeds to UNICEF and Global Giving in support of relief efforts for the war in Ukraine.
