Streptococcus zooepidemicus, or strep zoo, can pose a significant risk to dogs when multiple dogs are housed in stressful environments, such as facilities like animal shelters.
In an effort to address a bacterial outbreak at the Downey Animal Care Center, Los Angeles County officials are taking action today to safeguard animals and prevent further health issues.
While there is not available vaccine against strep zoo, the DACC is taking measures to control the spread of the bacteria and ensure the safety of animals. DACC did not immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday afternoon. A timeline of when cleaning efforts or the cost of these mitigation efforts were not immediately available.
DACC is being assisted by its partner, the ASPCA, to swab test affected kennel areas this week. Deep cleaning efforts have began, with special attention giving to areas housing positive or symptomatic dogs.How brown rats crawled off ships and conquered North American cities
