Furniture giant La-Z-Boy has started a viral petition to get rid of reclining seats on airplanes, acknowledging the frustration they cause for fellow passengers.
Iconic chair brand La-Z-Boy has started an online campaign to ban reclining chairs on aeroplanes. The furniture company, best known for its reclining chairs, started the petition as a joke on social media, however it quickly gathered traction and has since racked up almost 200,000 signatures.
Flights can already be a stressful experience for passengers, with people not wanting to move chairs or travellers causing problems for airline employees, so when someone decides to recline their chair it can very frustrating. Most airlines offer reclining seats in their economy class, which can make already cramped legroom even worse for anyone behind a reclining seat, reports The Express US. In the petition, La-Z-Boy said: 'Do the upright thing. Recline at home. Not on your flight. I commit to reserving the act of reclining for my home and will not engage in reclining aboard any and all future flights.' A large group of people would ban reclining seats, with over 41% in support of the idea, according to a Harris Poll. The petition from La-Z-Boy includes a reward for those who sign up for sweepstakes, with the chance of winning a recliner and $500 in flight credits. The marketing team at the furniture company came up with the idea and noted how unpopular reclining chairs on flights are. 'Our #BanReclining campaign is simple: Just because you can recline doesn't mean you always should,' Nelly Martinez Garza, Senior Director of Consumer Marketing at La-Z-Boy, told Newsweek. The goal of any marketing campaign is to get people's attention, and many people are discussing the merits of reclining chairs on flights, which is now synonymous with a reclining home chair company
