Social Services Minister Amanda Rishworth says the policy to let JobSeeker recipients work more hours before their pay is docked is a “thought bubble”.

Labor has hosed down calls for the government to adopt Peter Dutton’s policy to let unemployed people work more hours before they lose their welfare benefits.Social Services Minister Amanda Rishworth., but urged Labor to consider a proposal to let the unemployed earn an extra $150 a fortnight without their benefit being affected.

The policy received support from economists last week, who argued it would alleviate the very high effective marginal tax rates faced by JobSeeker recipients who lose benefits as they work more.

“We are always looking for ways to make it easier for people to participate in work,” Dr Chalmers told the ABC. Labor announced in the budget that it would increase the base rate of JobSeeker by $40 a fortnight, alongside a 15 per cent lift in rent assistance. In his budget reply speech, Mr Dutton said it made little sense to increase the dole in a tight labour market when his proposal would help alleviate labour shortages, encourage people back to work and take the pressure off the public purse and inflation.
