A maverick independent unionist backed by “a coalition of the unwanted” has fallen short of disrupting the Labor factional balance on the powerful national executive.
A maverick independent unionist backed by former Labor powerbroker Kim Carr has failed to disrupt the Left-Right balance on the party’s powerful national executive.
However, by Friday evening Mr Marshall had fallen short of the quota, securing 17 of the required 19 votes, and the Labor Left and Right factions maintained their balance of 10 seats each on the executive. “Ultimately, I view it as success in that people had enormous pressure put on them not to vote for me, and they stood firm,” he said.that he was backed by a “coalition of the unwanted” – a group of unnamed unions that were no longer in favour and felt locked out of the factions.Labor sources pointed to John Setka’s CFMEU Victorian branch and Victorian branches of the Health Services Union as among the coalition of unions backing Mr Marshall.
Mr Carr confirmed that he supported Mr Marshall and referred to Mr Marshall’s previous comments about wanting to build more democracy and debate in the Labor Party.“He’s performed very well, against the tide and usual chicanery,” he said.but has to win support from non-aligned delegates to achieve a majority on the national executive.
