Labor has revealed its first priority in mending Australia’s relationship with China as Anthony Albanese and Penny Wong prepare to sweep across the Pacific to strengthen ties in the region.
Beijing’s harsh coercive actions targeting key Australian export industries have remained in place for almost two years, but Labor has said it would be the first issue the new government would tackle when it attempts to improve bilateral relations.

Picture: Getty Images “China has become more aggressive and more assertive and our responsibility as the incoming government is to manage that complex relationship in a considered and sober fashion.”
“If there is to be an improvement in relations it makes sense to us for the first part of that, the first step, to be the removal of some of those sanctions and tariffs which are doing damage to our economy and to our employers and exporters,” he continued.Australia’s ties with China have soured more in recent months as Beijing has begun focusing greater attention on the Pacific.
The pair will continue to promote stability in the region, with the newly sworn in Foreign Minister expected to travel to Fiji as soon as Thursday.
