Labor has revealed when Australians will finally be told the referendum question which will embed the Voice to Parliament in the Constitution.

The committee of First Nations leaders from across the country met on Thursday where it was expected they would finalise the draft wording for the referendum and the constitutional amendment.

“Through the efforts of the working group and the engagement group, we are on track to get this thing done and get it done we will. The legislation will outline the proposed referendum question as well as the amendments which will be embedded into the constitution. But Ms Burney was forced to clear up speculation there was no longer a consensus over the wording of the referendum question within the advisory groups.“The wording will be decided on in the near future. The work of the working group and engagement group will absolutely inform where we go in terms of finalising that. I can assure you, we are so close. It is exciting.”

But concerns have arisen that the government’s draft wording, which mirrors Noel Pearson’s proposal to the Referendum Council in 2017, could give rise to legal challenges in the High Court.has put forward his own set of words which he says limits the obligation for the Voice’s recommendations to be carried when passing laws.
