Facebook and Instagram's parent company has warned a parliamentary committee that Labor's proposed misinformation crackdown could inadvertently chill 'free and legitimate political expression.'

Draft legislation released by the Albanese government in late June would give the Australian Communications and Media Authority new powers to dictate how social media companies combat misinformation and disinformation on their platforms.

“We can see some potential for that power to be abused, or for it to be used in a way that inadvertently chills free and legitimate political expression online.” Meta's Mr Machin said the tech giant had been a driving force behind developing the voluntary code and remained a “very strong supporter.” Labor’s proposed crackdown on misinformation and disinformation has been widely attacked as a threat to freedom of speech, withSpeaking to Sky News Australia’s Amanda Stoker on Tuesday night, former deputy prime minister John Anderson said that the proposal would cause “further damage” to the trust between politicians and the community.
