Albanese government wants bill passed to lift Sam Mostyn’s salary by 43%, in line with estimated average of chief justice of the high court’s salary
, by more than $214,000, saying the change is appropriate because she is not receiving the same sort of additional pensions that previous officeholders have enjoyed.
Hurley, the former chief of the defence force, received a military pension on top of his salary as governor general. Other past governors general have also received military or judicial pensions. The change represents a 43% pay rise in the legislated salary of the governor general. Gorman said the change was to ensure the salary remained “appropriate for the duration of this term”.
Hurley’s official portrait, to be displayed in Parliament House’s Historic Memorials Collection, was unveiled in Canberra on Monday.
