Thousands of Labour members and MPs are gathering in Liverpool for the party's first conference in power. The conference will emphasize key pledges from the election manifesto, including a renewed focus on tackling Covid corruption, strengthening workers' rights, and accelerating house building.

Angela Rayner speaks on the first full day of the annual Labour Party conference in Liverpool Thousands of Labour members and MPs are descending on Liverpool this week for the party’s first conference in power. But the party is set on using the conference to reiterate the pledges they made in their election manifesto, and make a few more.Chancellor Rachel Reeves confirmed on Monday that she has ordered an investigation into £674m worth of disputed Covid contracts.

“We are delivering on our commitment to appoint a Covid corruption commissioner. It could not be more urgent. And I have put a block on any contract being abandoned or waived until it has been independently assessed by the Covid commissioner,” she said. She said the Government is on the “verge of historic legislation” in “repealing the Tories’ anti-workers laws”.

Under the plans, schemes which meet high standards for design and quality would be fast-tracked through the planning process and given automatic approval by local authorities. “I’m deeply, deeply worried by the growing violence and settler violence that we see in the West Bank,” Lammy said.
