A Nottinghamshire Labour council leader expresses disappointment with Keir Starmer's position on the crisis in Gaza as internal divisions within the party on the issue increase.
A Nottingham shire Labour council leader says he is "disappointed" by Keir Starmer 's stance on the crisis in Gaza as the party's internal divisions on the issue grow. Tens of thousands took part in marches across the country on Saturday , including around 300 people who walked through the centre of Nottingham , to demand an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
This has included withholding power and water from Gaza and when Keir Starmer was asked earlier this month whether such action was appropriate, the Labour leader replied: "I think that Israel does have that right." Labour subsequently denied that this is what Sir Keir had meant, claiming that there was an issue of "overlapping questions.
It comes after two Nottingham Labour councillors were among over 200 across the country this week who called for Keir Starmer to shift his position on Gaza. A letter organised by the Labour Muslim Network was signed by elected members including Councillor Liaqat Ali and Councillor Salma Mumtaz, who represent the Hyson Green and Arboretum and Basford wards respectively for Labour on Nottingham City Council.
