Ministers are being urged to show more 'respect'
The new Labour government was issued a stern warning over its first Budget - before it had began. Chancellor Rachel Reeves is presenting the party's first fiscal plan in more than 14 years this afternoon .
Ahead of Ms Reeves being called to stand at the despatch box this afternoon, deputy speaker Nusrat Ghani gave Labour's front bench a dressing down. To the sound of cheers from opposition MPs, Ms Ghani said: "Over the last few days, ministers have made a series of new policy announcements with significant and wide-ranging implications for the government's fiscal policy and for the public finances.
She added: "I'm disappointed by comments made by government spokespeople, believing they can use precedent as an excuse, and telling them today that they are entirely wrong. Mr Speaker has always defended the undoubted right of this house, including opposition parties and backbenchers on all sides of this house, to be the first to hear major public policy announcements on behalf of their constituents.
