Stephen McCabe, a former leader of Inverclyde Council, has had his Labour Party suspension lifted after domestic assault charges against him were dropped by the Crown Office. McCabe stepped down as leader and was suspended following his arrest last year. He maintained his innocence throughout the legal process.

Labour has lifted the suspension of a senior councillor after domestic assault charges against him were dropped. It is understood Stephen McCabe, who was leader of Inverclyde Council before he was charged, is back in the party fold.

A spokesperson for the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service said this week: "After careful consideration of all of the relevant facts and circumstances, the Procurator Fiscal decided that the case should not proceed at this time.
