Our graph shows the increase of alcohol-specific deaths in the UK

Labour MP Cat Smith has told the House of Commons that there should be an increase in the price of a pint - rather than the 1p tax cut announced in last month's Budget.

In 2022, Ms Smith posted her support for local landlords on social media on a visit to The Plough in Galgate, saying: "It’s always great to catch up with local businesses and it was a pleasure to accept the invite from Chris and Jackie to see them as they take over the reins of The Plough. Local pubs are also community hubs, especially in the villages."

Lancaster has the highest rate of alcohol-specific deaths compared to any local authority in England and Wales, as reported on LancsLive earlier this year. There were a total of 43 alcohol-specific deaths in Lancaster in 2022. That works out as 29.8 per 100,000 people in the area. She added: “This is a short-sighted and naive decision-making and has been out of step with the evidence that experts have been telling us for years.”
