Rachel Reeves has insisted she will not back down on the decision to strip most pensioners of the winter fuel allowance

The Government, which has a Commons majority of 167, is widely expected to win the vote with most rebels indicating they will abstain rather than opposing the motion.the issue was “genuinely worrying people”, adding: “Most of us have had hundreds of emails on it. The biggest group is people who know it’s tough, but also know that we have to make difficult decisions and year one is the time to do it. But there is a lot of pressure on people from their constituencies for sure.
Speaking to a meeting of Labour MPs on Monday night, Rachel Reeves insisted she would not back down on the decision which she first announced in July. The Chancellor added: “It is the right thing to do, to target money at a time when finances are so stretched, at people who need them most… There are more difficult decisions to come. I don’t say that because I relish it. I don’t, but it is a reflection of the inheritance that we face.”
