Donald Trump provoked international condemnation for suggesting Palestinians could be resettled away from Gaza

President Donald Trump calls on reporters during a joint news conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday. Donald Trump’s proposal for the US to “take over” Gaza should be “called” out as “ethnic cleansing”, multiple Labour MPs have said.Backbenchers in Sir Keir Starmer’s party added that there could be no “excuse for silence” and that the UK had a duty to “oppose” the “dangerous” and “unacceptable” idea.

“They must be allowed to rebuild, and we should be with them in that rebuild on the way to a two-state solution,” he said. After PMQs, the Prime Minister’s Official Spokesman said that the UK Government would “speak to President Trump and his team about all of his proposals”. Andy McDonald, the MP for Middlesbrough and Thornaby East, said: “What he’s talking about here is ethnic cleansing. That’s now not in any doubt. It is staggering that a President of the United States would sanction and rubberstamp ethnic cleansing.

The furious response is likely to sound alarm bells within Labour that there could be a resumption of the splits over Middle Eastern policy which rocked the party in 2023 and 2024.
