While Wednesday's budget was not as bad as many in the environment sector feared, policy experts warn more is needed to save Britain's rivers from pollution
While Wednesday's budget was not as bad as many in the environment sector feared, policy experts warn more is needed to save Britain's rivers from pollution, the Rivers Trust, Surfers Against Sewage, River Action and Greenpeace are among the groups calling on ministers to implement “bold policy changes” to “turn things around” for Britain’s waterways.
However, the groups also said the Government must take “immediate action” on a number of areas outside the commission’s remit, including a “water-friendly farming commitment”.to help them manage their land in a more sustainable manner, and thus reduce pollution caused by agricultural runoff, but green groups have previously warned that Defra’s nature-friendly farming budget does not stretch far enough.
However, the Treasury described the farming budget as a “significant funding pressure” and warned it would be reviewed next year to ensure it was “affordable”. published a five-point manifesto with demands the new Government must meet to clean up Britain’s waterways. “The Environment Secretary Steve Reed will need all the financial help he can get from the Chancellor,” he added.
“We urge the UK Government to set out, as a matter of urgency, how current funding in this area can do more to halt the decline of nature and help to tackle climate change.”
