The UK's Labour Party is taking steps to address the electric vehicle (EV) charging crisis by providing guidelines for local authorities on implementing safe and effective cross-pavement charging solutions. These solutions aim to provide convenient charging options for residents, particularly those without off-street parking.
The Labour Party government is taking steps to address the electric car charging crisis as it encourages drivers to abandon petrol and diesel vehicles. The party has issued guidelines to assist local authorities in England in formulating policies for the safe and effective use of cross-pavement solutions , which can offer residents convenient charging options.
This includes information on areas, regulations, and processes to consider when developing policy, as well as case studies of local authorities that have successfully implemented installations. Two main types of solutions have been trialled and are currently available: cable channels embedded within the pavement and permanent under pavement cables. The Department for Transport guidance describes the latter option as: 'Solutions where a permanent charging cable is laid below the pavement, connecting the domestic chargepoint via removable bollards, a lance, or other connectors to the vehicle.' It further explains the former as: 'Solutions where a permanent charging cable is laid below the pavement, connecting the domestic chargepoint via removable bollards, a lance, or other connectors to the vehicle.' The benefits of this include the cost and convenience of charging, eliminating the risk of trailing cables, and access to smart EV charging. Furthermore, it provides access to domestic EV charging for those without off-street parking, reports Birmingham Live. According to the English Housing Survey (EHS), approximately 8 million households (32%) in England lack access to off-street parking such as a driveway, garage or residential car park. However, nearly 4 million households (16%) have 'adequate on-street parking', as defined by the EHS. These households could potentially benefit from safe domestic EV charging with the installation of cross-pavement solutions
