Labour would not go ahead with Government plans to combine disability benefit assessments but would work with disabled communities to craft a replacement policy, a shadow minister has said 🔴 ChaplainChloe reports

Shadow Disabilities Minister Vicky Foxcroft said she wantsbut would not share details of what the system would look like under a Labour government.

“Disabled people and organisations say there’s a huge lack of trust in the Department for Work and Pensions so you need to massively change that culture so it’s not seen as such a stressful experience when people are going through the assessment process. The DWP said the transition would happen slowly, with people financially protected, but there are concerns that in the future, large swathes of people who struggle to work could face having their benefits reduced.

“While the government is saying that there’s transitional arrangements for them, who else is coming in the future that won’t necessarily have those transitional arrangements?” she said. “There’s quite a lot of worries about that and whether or not there’ll be a move towards more sanctions.” Ms Foxcroft said she would want more focus on reasonable adjustments – changes organisations are expected to make to cater for someone with a condition, such as allowing extra time for activities or changing the environment.
