Starmer is no Blair and he knows it
Labour does not win general elections often. As this year’s campaign chief Pat McFadden admits, characteristically, “We usually lose.”
Behind this fear, a darker trauma still festers in the folk memory of the Labour Party. It is summed up in four fateful numerals:. Tony Blair’s unexpectedly large landslide victory in 1997 was the apogee of Labour history. Neil Kinnock’s unexpected trouncing by John Major in 1992 was its nadir. Many Labour veterans were at an all-party fundraiser this week for the innovative work of University College Hospital’s Dr Paul Mulholland on glioblastoma.
Some blame Kinnock for holding the triumphalist Sheffield rally before a vote had been cast, parading his cabinet to the blaring Queen hit “We Are the Champions”, and roaring at the crowd, “allllllllllriiiiiiiight!”. Others blame thefor middle earners in John Smith and Gordon Brown’s pompously presented Shadow Budget, which was seized on in a devastating “Labour’s Double Whammy” poster campaign. Whichever was at fault, Labour strategists decided “never again”.
He has hugged the “no complacency, no big taxes” rules but then rolled, hedgehog-like, into a ball to offer his electoral opponents the fewest possible vulnerable areas to attack.screamed “Nightmare on Kinnock Street” and belittled the “Welsh windbag”. Nobody has come up with a convincing personal attack on Sir Keir.
