In the face of a housing crisis and violence against migrants, why would we scatter them across the country in indefensible properties?
Of the four types of property the Home Office is looking to acquire, we have shortages of every single one
Even if you aren’t steeped in the detail of this country’s housing crisis, this approach has obvious problems. If far-right violence is expected to be a persistent threat – and Sir Keir Starmer clearly thinks so, as he’s announced aof specialist riot-control officers – then it is extraordinary to spread asylum seekers across thousands of indefensible properties in order to stop using remote ex-military bases.
The plan to acquire homes of multiple occupancy is particularly worrying. These are residences where rooms are let to strangers on an individual basis – often converted family homes, with the former living room turned into an extra bedroom to maximise rent. For obvious reasons, these are the highest-density form of tenancy on the market.
Much of the anger about the current policy of buying out hotels for asylum seekers is because people feel a local business and community asset is being taken away from local people. Can anyone at the Home Office really believe that it will generatedue to soaring rent pressures – and that’s before Cooper buys up a slice of the stock to make sure their city takes its fair share of asylum seekers.
