Labour’s plan to ban bonuses for water bosses has been branded a “feeble gesture” as campaigners call on political parties to commit to stronger measures to solveThe figures have led to calls for urgent reform to the water industry, which has been accused of underinvesting in its infrastructure over a period of decades.The industry’s regulator, Ofwat, is currently consulting on similar plans after being ordered to by the Government in February.

Ofwat said it was strengthening enforcement, including by introducing new rules that could see it prevent water companies from paying dividends when they don’t meet environmental targets. “But don’t fall for the spin – the deluge of shit pouring into our rivers and seas is a generational scandal where a broken system is causing catastrophic harm to lives, livelihoods and the natural world.”Water UK, the body that represents water companies, said the industry plans to triple investment to reduce spills by 40 per cent by 2030 and urged Ofwat to approve its proposals.
