Addressing party activists and supporters after her victory was confirmed, Mrs Spurrell – who is only the second person to ever hold the role – said it was a “huge privilege to do this role” but acknowledged there was still work to do to inform the community of what it entailed. In her victory speech, Mrs Spurrell, who served as deputy to previous commissioner Jane Kennedy before taking up the post, said it had not all been easy across the region but “challenging times” had been when communities had come together.
