Sir Keir Starmer will use Liz Truss's handling of the economy to hurt Rishi Sunak during Tuesday's ITV debate, Labour insiders sayin the first televised debate on Tuesday and is expected to go on the attack over the Tories’ stewardship of the country’s finances, particularly in the past few years.During her short stint in No 10, Ms Truss oversaw a mini-budget that was followed by turmoil on the financial markets, the pound plunging and interest rates soaring.
The shadow chancellor, Rachel Reeves, Labour Party leader Sir Keir Starmer and deputy Labour leader Angela Rayner at the launch event for Labour’s campaign bus at Uxbridge College Ms Rayner vowed that the Labour Party would never “run roughshod with the economy”, adding: “Because when you play fast and loose with the economy, like Liz Truss did … it is working people that pay the price.”
Under the headline “Truss: ‘I’m not the worst PM ever”, the Tory candidate for Norfolk North said: “The worst prime minister in recent years is Tony Blair, who created things like the Equality Act, the Human Rights Act and the Climate Change Act.”In defence of her own legacy, she said: “I campaigned in a leadership election on policies that got the support of Conservative Party members, policies in my view were the right policies.
