Labour wants to 'simplify' the process by which people can legally change their gender to make it less 'degrading' and 'tortuous', a shadow minister has said. Wes Streeting, the shadow health secretary, said parts of the process for acquiring a gender recognition certificate - the mechanism that allows transgender people to have their new gender recognised in law - were 'unnecessary' and 'degrading'.
In an article for the Sunday Times, the Harry Potter author said she would 'struggle' to vote for Labour in the general election. She added: 'For left-leaning women like us, this isn't, and never has been, about trans people enjoying the rights of every other citizen, and being free to present and identify however they wish. 'This is about the right of women and girls to assert their boundaries. It's about freedom of speech and observable truth.
