However, they made little impact in Walsall, where the Conservatives retained control. The highlight for Labour came the following Saturday when Richard Parker narrowly defeated incumbent West Midlands mayor Andy Street. Parker, who had been with Sir Keir and Angela Rayner at the Dudley launch, won by less than a third of a percentage point. Street, the former John Lewis chief executive, had been elected mayor in 2017 and became a prominent regional leader
