Meanwhile, the mayoral candidates held hustings at Wolverhampton University.Labour gained control of Cannock Chase and Lichfield City Councils, strengthened their position in Wolverhampton, and took control of Dudley from the Conservatives. However, they made little impact in Walsall, where the Conservatives retained control. The highlight for Labour came the following Saturday when Richard Parker narrowly defeated incumbent West Midlands mayor Andy Street. Parker, who had been with Sir Keir and Angela Rayner at the Dudley launch, won by less than a third of a percentage point.
