Labour urges Rishi Sunak to call general election as he nears one year as PM

Shadow Scotland Secretary Ian Murray said Sunak had been in charge 'a year too long' and called for a general election to happen immediately.

Sunak will mark a year as Prime Minister on Wednesday, but he has trailed Labour in the opinion polls for his entire time in office.

Murray said: “The Prime Minister lost to Liz Truss and a lettuce and now wants to present himself as what the country needs. “The Tories at Westminster have crashed the economy and fuelled the cost of living crisis with Brexit, leaving households across Scotland struggling to pay rent, mortgages and bills, and put food on the table.

The PM lost the two safe Tory seats of Tamworth and Mid Bedfordshire to Labour last week, and the Tory vote collapsed in the Rutherglen and Hamilton West by-election just a couple of weeks before.The cost of living has spiralled throughout Sunak's time in office. Sunak had served as Chancellor from February 2020 to July 2022, while Boris Johnson was Prime Minister.

By-elections Last week the Tories lost the safe seats of Tamworth and Mid Bedfordshire to Labour, despite having majorities of 19,000 and 24,000.
