Media billionaire Lachlan Murdoch made a personal plea to Google’s chief executive in an attempt to stop the tech giant from banning Aussie start-up Unlockd from its platform in 2018.

Media billionaire Lachlan Murdoch made a personal plea to Google’s boss, Sundar Pichai, in an attempt to stop the tech giant fromThe revelations surfaced in court documents filed this week to a California District Court as bankruptcy trustees for Unlockd’s US operations continue a long-running antitrust battle with Google over its decision to ban the start-up from its platforms.

Lachlan Murdoch, now executive chairman of both News Corp and Fox, personally appealed to Google boss Sundar Pichai on behalf of Unlockd.Unlockd, which was planning to list on the ASX that year, was derailed when Google claimed the app breached company policies and removed it from Google platforms such as AdMob and the Google Play Store.

“The Google CEO, Sundar Pichai, responded, in essence, by saying that Google would do what it wants and take its chances in court. Mr Pichai was effectively saying that Google will do what it wants and will grind Unlockd down in litigation.” Unlockd also said that Google’s internal communications, discovered through the court process, revealed how the tech giant regards the lockscreen as potentially the most valuable real estate on a mobile phone.Unlockd’s Australian operation would stand to benefit if the US legal action is successful. A positive outcome would also offer a chance of a return on the $50 million invested by shareholders, including Murdoch and former Telstra chief executive Sol Trujillo.
