The PSNI and Department of Justice in Northern Ireland currently have no formal definition of child criminal exploitation, unlike other parts of the UK. Strategies to tackle this issue have only recently begun to be developed, despite it being a long-standing problem in the region.
The exploitation of children by criminal gangs and paramilitary groups has been an issue in Northern Ireland for decades, yet work has only recently begun on developing strategies to try to address it. In other parts of the UK, strategies to tackle child criminal exploitation have been in place for nearly 10 years, particularly with regards to County Lines drug dealing, where an emphasis is placed on exploited young people being seen as a victim rather than the main prepatrator of a crime.
They also recognise these vulnerable children as victims of modern slavery and trafficking. However, that has not been the case in Northern Ireland, with the PSNI and Department of Justice currently having no formal definition of what child criminal exploitation is, with a a Department of Justice Spokesperson saying: " Policy work in relation to the definition of CCE is currently nearing completion and will require ministerial approva
