Labor frontbencher Michelle Rowland says the party is ready to act on market power, user privacy and harmful content after the federal election.

Ms Rowland urged the companies to be more collaborative in response to growing government and community concerns.on the dissemination of violent material but the party criticised the process and wants Parliament's intelligence and security committee to examine the rules.The companies are participating in a government-led taskforce examining ways to deal with the sharing of harmful material.

Former Victorian premier Steve Bracks has urged the Labor Party to reexamine Australia's media ownership laws."I think an appropriate and graduated response would be to examine what powers the regulator already has, have they been utilised and, if not, what sort of powers need to be introduced," she said.

"I would hate to see further concentration of the media … and I think that we will be poorer for that," Mr Bracks said. "And I think Labor will have to look at that issue again, just as we did when we were last in government."
