Lady Gaga discusses the underwhelming reception to her latest film, 'Joker: Folie à Deux,' while promoting her new album, 'Mayhem.'
Lady Gaga is speaking candidly about the lukewarm reception to her latest film, Joker: Folie à Deux. In her recent cover story for Elle magazine, the 38-year-old pop superstar and actress addressed the film's disappointing performance at the box office and among critics. Despite the mixed reviews, Gaga maintains a surprisingly zen attitude towards the public's reaction. 'People just sometimes don't like some things,' she stated simply. 'It's that simple.
' The film, a dark superhero-adjacent musical that starred Gaga alongside Joaquin Phoenix, faced criticism for its unconventional genre blend and lackluster marketing. While the original Joker film grossed over $1 billion in 2019, its sequel only managed $207.5 million, according to Box Office Mojo, with a dismal 28 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Gaga revealed that portraying a non-professional singer in the film posed a unique challenge. She explained that her usual singing technique, honed through years of experience as a trained vocalist, had to be abandoned for Lee's character. 'For me, there's plenty of notes, actually, from Lee,' she shared. 'I'm a trained singer, right? So even my breathing was different when I sang as Lee,' Gaga emphasized. 'When I breathe to sing on stage, I have this very controlled way to make sure that I'm on pitch and it's sustained at the right rhythm and amount of time, but Lee would never know how to do any of that.' Gaga continued, emphasizing the importance of stripping away her technical skill and truly embodying Lee's character. The actress acknowledges the inherent risk involved in artistic pursuits, stating, 'I think to be an artist, you have to be willing for people to sometimes not like it,' she said. 'And you keep going even if something didn’t connect in the way that you intended.' Gaga believes that losing her artistic nerve is a greater fear than facing critical disapproval or commercial failure. 'When that makes its way into your life, that can be hard to get control of. It’s part of the mayhem,' she added, referencing her upcoming eighth studio album, 'Mayhem,' set for release on March 7. The album, a kaleidoscopic blend of various influences, is described as a wild mix of 90s alternative, electro-grunge, Prince and Bowie melodies, guitar and attitude, funky bass lines, French electronic dance and analog synths. Gaga envisions each song as a distinct shade, comparing the album's overall vibe to the reddish tones of her hit song 'Bad Romance.
