During the winter months, the number of incidents that mountain rescue teams are called out to across the Lake District increases as walkers often don't take into consideration the different equipment they might need for darker and colder days
As the days get shorter mountain rescuers will be preparing for the number of call-outs to increase as walkers head onto the fells ill-equipped.Richard Warren, the chair of the Lake District Search and Mountain Rescue Association, said his teams were called out a record 680 times in 2021 and the start of 2022 was the same. It was the busiest year on record since Beast from the East in 2018.
Instead, rescuers have said to use OS Locate. Earlier this week, mountain rescuers reminded people to make sure they are prepared for walking in the Lake District after the threat of a storm this weekend. Poor signal in the area meant that teams weren't able to talk directly to the walker. Rescuers then made the decision to call out the team because of the storm approaching.
