The walleye fishing can be superb, especially for those out early and late in the day.

The Put-in-Bay Aquatic Visitors Center on South Bass Island in Western Lake Erie will take the summer off for a $6.2 million major renovation, said Kendra Wecker of the Ohio Division of Wildlife. A rendering of the new Visitors Center shows facade of the new facility, which is expected to reopen in 2025.CLEVELAND, Ohio — The fishing is going to be hopping all along Ohio’s Lake Erie shoreline for the Memorial Day weekend, from Port Clinton and Toledo to the Pennsylvania line.

The festival is open from 5-11 p.m. Friday; 11 a.m.-11 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday; and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. on Monday. VisitExpect the launch ramps and fishing piers to be crowded during the holiday weekend, so plan ahead and be especially careful after dark. The near-shore walleye fishing has been best in 16 to 20 feet of water, while many anglers are heading out to the 47- to 52-foot depths to escape the crowds and find big walleye.

The party fishing boats out of Marblehead and Port Clinton are ignoring the perch fishing, despite a daily bag limit of 30 perch, because the walleye are still biting with a vengeance around the productive reefs off Camp Perry and Port Clinton. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources will shut down the Put-in-Bay Aquatic Center this summer for a $2.6 million renovation. The facility and dock should reopen in 2025.
