The Lakers have received permission to interview several current NBA assistant coaches for their head coaching vacancy, including, clockwise from top left, Denver’s David Adelman, Minnesota’s Micah Nori, Boston’s Sam Cassell, New Orleans’ James Borrego and Miami’s Chris Quinn.
The report added that the Lakers’ coaching search is “expected to proceed in stages with this first wave … a period of talking to coaches with whom the Lakers have more history, followed by a whittling of the list to a final round of candidates.” Borrego is the Pelicans’ lead assistant under coach Willie Green after being the Charlotte Hornets’ head coach from 2018-22. He was a San Antonio Spurs assistant coach under longtime head coach Gregg Popovich from 2003-10 and 2015-18. Borrego was also a Pelicans’ assistant from 2010-12 and Orlando Magic assistant from 2012-15, including being the Magic’s interim head coach for the final 30 games of the 2014-15 season following Jacque Vaughn’s firing.
