Maurizio Leschiutta, former head of BMW's M Hybrid V8 LMDh program, takes the helm of Lamborghini's motorsport activities. Leschiutta brings vast experience to the Italian manufacturer, aiming to guide Lamborghini's LMDh, GT3, and one-make racing programs.
Lamborghini has appointed Maurizio Leschiutta as its new motorsport boss, bringing in an experienced leader to oversee the Italian manufacturer's ambitious racing programs. Leschiutta joins from BMW , where he headed up the M Hybrid V8 LMDh program, and takes the reins from Giorgio Sanna, who left the company in March last year. He will report directly to Chief Technology Officer Rouven Mohr, who has been acting as the interim motorsport chief.
Leschiutta expressed his excitement about the new role, describing it as 'a great pleasure' and 'an important milestone'. He said, 'I hope I can contribute a small paragraph in one of the many pages of its history books, and I am confident that, together, we shall rise to the challenges in the years to come.' Mohr welcomed Leschiutta to the Lamborghini family, highlighting his 'incredible wealth of expertise and knowledge in motorsport.'Leschiutta boasts an impressive racing pedigree, having spent 11 years at Ferrari's Formula 1 team in the engine department. He worked as a support engineer for drivers like Gerhard Berger, Jean Alesi, and Eddie Irvine. Later, he moved to Maserati, where he contributed to the development of the V12 engine powering the successful MC12 GT1 contender. He then served as technical director for Audi's DTM program with the WRT team before joining BMW M Motorsport.Lamborghini's motorsport plans are shifting gears under Leschiutta's leadership. The manufacturer is scaling back its SC63 LMDh program, exiting the World Endurance Championship in 2025 and focusing on a single car entry in the IMSA Endurance Cup's GTP class. This decision comes after the WEC mandated two-car entries for the Hypercar class, stretching Lamborghini's resources thin. The SC63 will compete under the banner of Automobili Lamborghini Squadra Corse for the first time. This marks a complete separation from the Iron Lynx team, which previously ran the Lamborghini LMDh in both WEC and IMSA. Lamborghini is yet to reveal the full details of its new entry structure.Meanwhile, the development of a new GT3 contender based on the Temerario road car is underway. This car, due for customer release in 2026, will be developed in collaboration with Podium Advanced Technologies instead of Dallara Automobili, as was the case with the Huracan. The Super Trofeo one-make version of the new GT3 car is slated to arrive in 2027
