They took five of this year’s special awards for their projects in brightening up their areas and working to become “more climate and nature friendly”
Everything came up roses for seven green-fingered Lanarkshire community groups who earned recognition at the annual Beautiful Scotland awards.Awards were presented at a ceremony at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh, as organisers from environment charity Keep Scotland Beautiful were able to host an in-person event for the first time in four years.
Posting on Facebook, the “delighted” group said: “It was a very enjoyable evening and great to see old friends and meet new people – thank you to everybody in the village who has supported us and helped us achieve this award.” Run by Forth and district initiative, the group has an eco site housing not only the polytunnel but several other environmental projects including collecting rainwater to use for plants as well as solar-powered light.
Glenboig Development Trust won the new entrant award and received a silver gilt certificate; and Newarthill community cuncil received a silver certificate following last month’s judging visits, where experts assessed groups’ efforts in horticultural achievement, environmental responsibility and community participation.
