Airdrie and Coatbridge amateur operatic society were 24 hours away from a show four years in the making when their venue was closed for safety reasons

A Lanarkshire theatre group had their long-awaited show cancelled on the eve of opening night by the venue’s closure due to collapse-risk concrete – three years after the same production was axed due to the first Covid lockdown.

Laura said: “We couldn’t believe this was seriously happening for a second time – to have this same show cancelled at this point again is unthinkable and everyone was saying it’s like a Hollywood script. We just want to know that all the staff and everybody at the Civic is OK. ACAOS were due to premiere Oklahoma on March 17 2020 but the run was cancelled 24 hours from curtain up when Boris Johnson first announced the requirement for social distancing ahead of the full lockdown.

She said: “We’re investigating every avenue and nothing is off the table; there are a lot of ifs, buts and maybes because the scale of the production including the live orchestra is so significant, and there’s an extreme lack of venues in North Lanarkshire – there’s only Cumbernauld theatre, Motherwell civic and Airdrie town hall.”
