Lancashire councillors have approved a 5.31% increase in council tax to support policing. The rise, which amounts to an extra £14 per year for a typical Band D property, is necessary to close a projected £6.696 million funding gap in 2025/26. Police and Crime Commissioner Clive Grunshaw stated this was the only viable option to avoid cutting front-line police officers and PCSOs.

Councillors have rubber stamped the imposition of the maximum permitted increase of 5.31 per cent on council tax bills to pay for policing in Lancashire.

The majority of households in East Lancashire are within Council Tax Bands A and B. Mr Grunshaw, speaking on a video-link from the Association of Police and Crime Commissioners conference in London, told the meeting that the Lancashire force’s financial situation after the new Labour government’s grant settlement was better than under the previous 14 years of austerity.

“I am committed to rebuilding neighbourhood policing. Its mad that we still have less officers today than 2010 but that is the case.” In the provisional settlement, it was confirmed that PCCs were expected to increase council tax for a Band D property by the maximum £14 in 2025/26 without the need to hold a referendum.”
