Blackburn Rovers FC and Morecambe FC are partnering with Sky Bet and the British Heart Foundation to provide funded defibrillators to local community groups in Lancashire. The initiative aims to address the urgent need for increased defibrillator access in areas like Morecambe and Wensley Fold, where residents face significantly longer retrieval times due to limited availability.
Two Football League clubs from Lancashire , Blackburn Rovers FC and Morecambe FC, have joined forces with Sky Bet and the British Heart Foundation (BHF) to address the critical issue of defibrillator inequality in communities across the UK. The clubs are actively encouraging local community groups, sports teams, and organizations to apply for funded defibrillators through the BHF's Community Defibrillator Fund.
The initiative aims to ensure that everyone has access to these potentially life-saving devices, regardless of their location. \Research conducted by the BHF has highlighted the stark disparity in defibrillator access, revealing that Morecambe and Wensley Fold, just two miles from Rovers' Ewood Park stadium, are among the priority areas where more community defibrillators are urgently needed. Statistics show that residents in Wensley Fold are, on average, 420 meters away from their nearest public access defibrillator, falling far short of the national recommendation of 200 meters. Similarly, in Morecambe, the average distance to a defibrillator is 818 meters, resulting in a potential retrieval time of 10 minutes. \Every minute without CPR and defibrillation during a cardiac arrest significantly reduces the chances of survival by up to 10 percent. The BHF and Sky Bet emphasize that anyone can use a defibrillator, as these devices provide clear instructions and only deliver a shock if necessary. They encourage individuals to call 999 in case of a cardiac arrest and follow the dispatcher's guidance while awaiting further help. To apply for a funded community defibrillator package, interested parties are urged to visit the BHF website.
