Lancashire's hidden gem bluebell wood walk with stop at 18th century pub
This week's suggested walks brings us to another of Lancashire's lesser known villages - and a even lesser known walking spot.
The village of Newburgh is located in West Lancashire, near to Parbold and Burscough, making it easy to reach for those travelling for example from the M6. The historic village is surrounded by Green Belt land and has a village green, which is the site of an ancient fair. The area has a mixture of 17th, 18th and 19th century buildings and with more than 40 listed buildings and many historic houses the village radiates character and charm. Our route takes us through woodland which is little known but offers picturesque scenery and a quiet place to unwind.Known as the bluebell woods, the nature spot not only has its titular flowers but also a stream similar to those seen at nearby Fairy Glen.
The 18th century inn is a Grade II listed building and is described as a "traditional English real ale pub" which promises a friendly, relaxed atmosphere with "wooden beams, cosy corners and warm décor". For those wanting food, there's an offer of casual dining and comfort dishes. The walk covers a distance of around two and a half miles and as always, it's important to wear appropriate clothing and footwear for the conditions.
