The Wild West theme park in Morecambe was loved by kids across the north west and beyond
Billed as a major new attraction that will re-imagine Morecambe as a seaside resort for the 21st Century, for many the Eden Project can't come quickly enough.
The amusement park first opened its gates in 1906 under the name West End Amusement Park. Little is known about the park's early years until 1936 when it was bought by the Thompson family, proprietors of Blackpool Pleasure Beach. They also owned Pleasureland in Southport. The new tower, sponsored by Polo Mints, was positioned at the front of the park, resulting in a welcome boost in visitor numbers. Unfortunately, neither this nor a visit from former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, who named one of the carousel horses after herself in 1997, could save the park.
Texas Tornado The 3,000ft long coaster was renamed Texas Tornado in 1987 after the entire park adopted a western theme. Regrettably, it was demolished in 2000 after 60 years at the theme park. In 2000, the ride was relocated to Southport Pleasureland and rebranded as King Solomon's Mines. It is now believed to be stored at Dreamland in Margate.
Haunted Silver Mine The Haunted Silver Mine was a ghost train ride that opened in 1987 and closed in 1998. Originally known as Scream Machine when it first started operating in 1978, it later changed its name to Star Treker and adopted a western mine theme when the park rebranded to Frontierland. The ride was eventually removed in 2000 when the park closed.
